Mobile food unit is a big hit with local students

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Catering Services team is celebrating the success of a new mobile food unit which has been given a thumbs-up by local school children.

Located at Bryntirion Comprehensive School, the mobile food unit was provided as part of an initiative designed to encourage pupils to eat a healthy lunch. It was made possible by a Welsh Assembly Government ‘Appetite for Life’ grant and provides pupils with an alternative to sitting down in a canteen while discouraging them from leaving the school site in search of ‘fast food’ options.

Food on offer in the trailer includes baguettes, sandwiches and wraps as well as a choice of warm options such as pizzas and paninis. Pupils are enjoying the additional choice and freedom given to them, and perhaps more importantly, the great food on offer.

Team Manager for Catering Services’ School Meals, Louise Kerton, said: “The mobile unit is an initiative to get young people to make healthier choices at mealtimes.  A large number of students will not eat in the school canteen and would rather leave the school site and purchase less healthy options from other food outlets. The mobile unit gives the students a bigger choice within the school grounds by offering this alternative.

“The unit has proved to be a success despite the recent rain and I am hoping it will become even more popular in the summer months, allowing students to eat outside where it is less crowded and in the fresh air.”

The mobile food unit at Bryntirion Comprehensive School is the latest addition to the good work carried out by Catering Services in actively promoting healthy eating and the importance of enjoying a healthy lifestyle at schools throughout Bridgend County Borough.
